2001 Subaru Outback. 2.5L backed up by the 4 speed automatic. A proper battlewagon of a car. It was slow and tried to kill me with gas fumes every time the temperature dropped below 15f but she had plenty of character. A good first car for both myself and my sister, and I do miss it from time to time (sold to a Subaru mechanic in Maine in the summer of 2017, only 110k on it at the time).
The Corolla behind it on the other hand was an awful car. Only Toyota my family has owned in the last 20 years and yet it’s still the CEL I have seen the most, and I drive a 15 year old Mini with 160k. When my dad asked me which one should be traded in when he bought his BRZ I didn’t even have to think before telling him the Corolla.

My wife had an Outback sedan of similar vintage. That was the car that taught me that Subaru didn’t design interiors for anyone over 6' tall. I always felt like I was sitting on the thing instead of in it. It’s also the only car I had personal experience with that came out ahead with an extended warranty (she bought it before we met) . Head gaskets at 65k.

If you think the Subaru is bad for tall people don’t try a Corolla. I fit fine in the Outback but the in the Corolla I put the seat all the way back and my knees still hit the dashboard.
We got lucky with gaskets in this car. We bought it with 30k on it and never had to do gaskets. It did have the typical Subaru rust going when we sold it though.

With her car is wasn’t like I was hitting my head on the headliner or anything, it was just that everything seemed too low. The dash, the console, the wheel, every thing. It was like if I could have lowered the seat about 4" everything would have been ok. But she absolutely loved that car.

“slow and tried to kill me with gas fumes every time" is not a "good" car.
